Our World

1.Who am I:

The big idea

‘Ourselves’ is a wonderful theme at any age, but with children of 5-7 it is especially exciting because they are at a stage in their lives when they are just beginning to feel
‘grown up’ as they learn important adult skills such as reading, writing and mathematics. They are also finding out the skills they need to be part of a group and are moving away
from the self-centred picture of themselves that dominates the first few years of their life to a realisation that their ‘self’ is not just about them but is also defined by their
relationships with others. Above all, we should celebrate our differences whilst seeing our similarities to our group members. So, we are individuals as well as important members of a wider community.

2.The Magic Toymaker:

The big idea

Toys come in many shapes and sizes. But all are designed for us to have fun with, to learn new skills and to exercise our bodies and our imagination.

3.Seeing the light

The big idea

If there was no light, there would be no life on our planet. Light helps plants to grow, it warms the planet, and it allows us to see all the wonders around us.

4.Buildings

The big idea
There are structures around us all the time, some of which we barely notice. What are they made from? What is their purpose? What do you notice about their shapes? What can be done to make them stronger? Through this unit you will become builders and discover secrets to holding up bridges and skyscrapers.

5.We are what we eat

The big idea
Food plays a vital role in history and culture throughout the world because food is essential to life. By learning about the different types and amounts of food our bodies need, we can plan healthier diets and enjoy longer lives.

6.Let's Celebrate

The big idea

Celebrations are an important part of human life. They are one of the things that make us uniquely human. All peoples and cultures, from every part of the world, take part in and hold celebrations to mark special events and special times in someone’s life.

7.Time Detectives

The big idea

Would you like to be a detective? A time detective who goes in search of evidence from the past? Evidence that tells you where people lived, what people did and what happened to them? Detectives need clues – our clues are going to be old objects and treasures from the past.

1.Scavengers and Settlers

The big idea

Humans are special. Unlike other animals, we can adapt and learn new skills in order to survive, which is exactly what our ancestors did in the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages.

2.Chocolate

The big idea

Wouldn’t it be amazing if chocolate grew on trees? Well, it does! Wouldn’t it be amazing if I said we were going to make some chocolate? Well, we are! And we’re going to discover even more amazing things about chocolate…

3.Saving the World

The big idea

Rainforests once covered 20% of our world’s surface. Now they cover only 5%. Every second, an area of the rainforest the size of a football field is being destroyed. Some scientists believe that, if we lose our rainforests, we might put our whole planet at risk. What will we do to help save the rainforest?

4.Time and Place, Earth and Space

The big idea

We know that when we look up at our sky on a clear day we will see the Sun. We know the Sun gives us light to heat the Earth and help things grow but what does the Sun have to do with our time? Time to find out!

5.Temples,Tombs and Treasures

The big idea

The people who helped create the first great civilisations were not unlike you and me. Today we can learn a lot about these people and their way of life through the things they left behind – from everyday objects to magnificent and rare treasures.

6.Different places similar lives

The big idea

People lead different lives. Even people in the same country, the same town or the same street can have different lifestyles. But they can have things in common, too – they can both like the same food or football team! We are going to find out about things that make us different and things that make us the same.

7.Shaping Up

The big idea

Your body is the most valuable thing you will ever own. It’s your job to keep your body fit and healthy because it has to last you a lifetime! We are going to find out how best you can do that.

8.Gateways to the World

The big idea

Everyday millions of people take to the skies, making journeys in airplanes. Air travel helps to connect people around the world.

9.Fashion

The big idea

From the clothes that we wear to the groups that we belong to, fashion is about how we want others to view us and think about us. It’s also about our tastes – the things that we like and we don’t like. For some, fashion is about being popular, for others it is keeping
up-to-date with the latest fads and crazes. Some people use fashion to fit in, whilst others use it to prove that they are different. By learning about fashion, we are learning about people and society, and the things that influence how we, as groups and individuals, present ourselves – to our friends, family and communities.

1.Go with the flow

The big idea

The world’s rivers are our most precious resource. This unit studies the impact of the world’s rivers on people and landscapes in the past, present and future.

2.Black Gold ?

The big idea

Oil is essential to our daily lives. It gives us many thousands of different products, most of which we have all come to rely on. But what might happen when the oil runs out?

3.Myths and Legends

The big idea

In this unit the children are going to learn about myths and legends from around the world. They will look at myths from the host and home countries and think about why people used such stories to reflect on life at the time.

4.Space Explorers

The big idea

We know that when we look up at our sky we will see the Sun, the Moon and the stars. We take them for granted. But why are they there? What do they do? How do they affect the Earth? Astronomy, like all sciences, is about asking questions. By becoming space
explorers, we can find out more about our solar system and the deeper mysteries of the universe.

5.Here & Now, There & Then

The big idea

Some of you are lucky enough to have had the chance to live in more than one country. You can talk about your ‘host country’ and ‘home country’. You will have learned so much from this experience – let’s find out what you know and what more there is to learn…

6.The Great, The Bold and The Brave

The big idea

The history of western civilisation begins with the Greeks and the Romans. Their expanding empires helped to spread ideas about architecture, food, entertainment, literature, science, medicine and politics across the globe. As their empires ended, other cultures rose to prominence, absorbing and passing on their own ideas and cultures – creating the world we know today.

7.Moving People

The big idea

Sometimes people choose to move, sometimes this movement is forced upon them. Both can have an impact on the societies and places that they leave behind, and those that they join at their journey’s end.

8.Building a Village

The big idea

Is this neighbourhood a good place to live – what do you think? Have you ever wondered why people in the past chose to live here? Together, we are going to find out about the places where people live. We’ll be looking at different countries as well as different times in history and different societies.

9.Drug Education

The big idea

The use of drugs is a controversial topic. All drugs, legal and illegal, affect how the mind and body works and there are risks associated with them.

Parents please encourage your children to share their learning.
